"Could working hard put you in a direct line for a promotion" - I've seen too many times were good work actually prevents promotions because you can't be lost in your current position.

"Do I want all of the stress without a direct tie-in for reward" - Starting your own business has stress and is hard, but the reward and failure is all yours!
