People’s reaction to “I’m a web developer.”

Is it that hard to believe that a decent looking female, who is social, and has a fun personality, chose the career path of web development?  For some, this is a very surprising thing.  I think 99 out of 100 times I tell people I am a web developer their reactions is always surprised or shocked.  My first reaction to this is to wonder why they don’t think a female has the ability to be a programmer, but then I realize that it really comes down to the fact that I don’t fit the general stereotype of a web developer.  No offense to all the techie people out there, but there are some who have helped to attach this stigma to us.  I am not going to lie, as a tech nerd myself, the first image that comes to mind when I think of a programmer is a nerdy quiet guy, who isn’t very social, loves video games, and whose whole life revolves around coding.  That just isn’t me.  Don’t get me wrong I enjoy my job, but that is where it ends.  I don’t spend my free time researching and playing with the latest technology.  When I chose Computer Science as my major I knew there weren’t a lot of women in the field, but I never expected it to be a shock to people.  I have realized that the surprised reaction is something that I am just going to have to accept.  What’s even more interesting is the shock of people who I have actually worked with, but that is for another post…
